The EU’s role in vaccine inequity – Sweden’s State Review at the 80th Session of the Committee on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW)
22 Oct 2021
Today, Sweden 🇸🇪 is being considered at the 80th Session of the Committee on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) to assess how the country has complied to its extraterritorial duties to fulfill, protect and respect women’s rights.
The #Fem4PeoplesVaccine campaign has submitted a shadow report to CEDAW on how Sweden has failed to uphold these rights by blocking the TRIPS waiver. 🙋🏾 If the main bottleneck is supply, the waiver would temporarily break patents in order to share vaccine recipes, so more countries could produce and the whole world could be vaccinated more quickly.
This would not only alleviate the pandemic impact, but also promote a wholesome beneficial effect for women, the group most affected by the pandemic. Women are at the front of the pandemic response as health workers. Global rates of domestic violence have escalated. Job loss increased predominantly for women. SRHR services have been shut down, considered nonessential during #COVID19.
Still, UK, Norway, Switzerland and the EU are selfishly blocking the TRIPS waiver while other countries continue to waste time and prevaricate, ensuring their home-based Big Pharma companies profits.
