The pandemic has a sex worker’s face

11 Mar 2022

In the last 2 years, rich countries have been able to vaccinate their populations with 3 or even 4 doses, while low-income countries have not been able to vaccinate more than18% of their populations with a first dose. However, these figures don’t reveal the inequalities within countries. Women not only are at the forefront of the response to the pandemic as they are also its main victims and face more obstacles in accessing health services. Only one woman for every three men is being vaccinated against Covid-19 in some LIMCs, a CARE study revealed (@careorg).

Coincidently (or not), March 11, the day the WHO declared the Covid-19 outbreak a pandemic, is on the same week as International Women’s Rights Day, and the #Fem4PeoplesVaccine campaign brings forth the voice of those groups most marginalized and most affected by Covid-19 and highlights the gendered impacts of this health crisis.

The pandemic has the face of a woman from the Global South, but so does its response.
